Executive Headteacher’s Blog – February 2018

From Mr Carlyle

Executive Headteacher’s Blog – February 2018

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your continued support of our lovely school and for you all to do to help and encourage everyone. It is wonderful to meet with so many of you and to hear about your ideas, views and suggestions – please keep them coming!

One of the reasons for having the blog is to keep you up to date with some of the things we are doing in Warmington and also in Titchmarsh. I hope you find it useful.

Ofsted

Thank you to everyone for supporting us during our Ofsted inspection and to those of you who were able to complete the Parent View for us in such a short time – we really appreciate the time you took for us. The report should be published in the next few weeks - we will let you know when it is available.

Attendance

Thank you for your support with attendance – I know you hear a lot about it from me but it’s crucial that pupils attend school regularly. Our attendance for last term was over 96% - which sounds very impressive but could be even better! It is certainly the season for illnesses with the coughs and flu doing the rounds but please can you help us by providing notes and medical reasons for absence, otherwise we have to record absence as unauthorised.

Thank you as well for keeping term-time holidays down to a minimum – unless there is an exceptional reason for a holiday, I am unable to authorise it. County are now fining families who take holidays in term-time and Headteachers are required to report holidays over 10 sessions. So, thank you to those many families who wait until the holiday times for supporting us – it is very much appreciated.

Unity

I’ve been asked by some parents about the Unity and what has happened to the Unity events. The combined number of both Warmington and Titchmarsh is now 200 so it’s much more difficult to get the schools together on the same occasions as before. We do, however, do a lot of events together – not only the sporting events and tournaments but Year 5 and 6 pupils have been at Oundle School together on a Maths workshop; the joint Year 6 Govilon trip is a must in the calendar each year now and the trips to the Frontier Centre and York are always a highlight, too. We’re also doing the Candlemas and Kid Lit events and the Cluster Orchestra so there are opportunities for some year groups to get together.

There are also plans for Science workshops at Oundle Schools for some of the year groups and Miss Ibotson is working hard to get these underway – so, while it’s trickier now the schools are bigger, there are still opportunities to move forward. The teaching staff work together very closely across both schools and we hold Unity meetings every few weeks at the different schools, sharing best practice and looking at new ideas which will benefit the pupils and the experience they get.

Surveys

Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who completed the surveys for us before Christmas – they were great to read and a wonderful endorsement of the work we are doing every day. I have made sure that your positive comments have been passed onto staff and I can genuinely say that they were thrilled.

Some headlines:

100% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that their child was happy in school.

100% of respondents would recommend this school to other parents.

100% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that their child is taught well.

And some quotes:

All teachers and staff are always approachable and dedicated for pupils' well-being

The atmosphere and wonderful staff.

That each child is treated as an individual which inspires confidence.

It's like walking into a big hug.

(I might have to use that last one as a new advertising slogan for us!!)

One of the sections asked about one thing you might change. Some of the comments included:

A re-evaluation of the Nativity for the older years – we’ve started reviewing this and are looking at having a Summer Production for the older children after their SATs have finished, particularly after last year’s Alice spectacular!

Changes to us being a school with older pupils up to Year 6, rather than up to Year 4 , were also mentioned – examples of things we’ve started doing include the Govilon trip, Year 6 buddies, revision groups with Titchmarsh and the planned Science work at Oundle for Upper Key Stage 2.

We will continue to look at further changes and improvements to the school and welcome your ideas – please keep coming to the Coffee Afternoons before the sharing assemblies and you are always welcome to chat to me whenever I’m in school. You are always welcome to come in and to speak to any of us!

Don’t forget our Parents’ Evenings on February 26th and 28th and – very advanced notice – we’re holding a Parents’ E-Safety Information Evening on Wednesday May 2nd at 6pm so if you want to know more about how to keep your child safe online, come and join us!

Thank you again for your support – it is great working with you!
